Your Opinion: You can't legislate morality

Dear Editor:

I was listening to the radio and the Jefferson City mayor was on air, trying to convince we the people that the city of Jefferson needs a primary seat belt law. This is just another example of the nanny state trying to take care of us because we are too stupid to use our seat belts. If we had such a law, would the citizens that don't currently wear seat belts, start? I don't think so.

We currently have laws against robbery, but businesses still get robbed. We have laws against murder, but people still get murdered. We have laws against drinking and driving, but people still drink and then drive. I guess people that drive motorcycles would be exempt, since I have never seen a motorcycle that has seat belts! You talk about dangerous, that's really dangerous. Maybe we should make a law requiring all motorcycle manufactures to install seat belts on there products and then require those that ride such vehicles to wear them! That doesn't sound very sensible, does it?

It is not government's concern if I wear a seat belt or not. There are more people dying because they smoke than die because some don't wear a seat belt. Why not ban smoking? More damage is done by people consuming alcohol, but the politicians continue to allow alcohol consumption. When will these do-gooders finally realize that they can't legislate morality? As much as I would like to see those items go away, no law will ever succeed in eliminating these vices. Only by changing the human heart can this be accomplished. The only way to change the human heart, is if they accept the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal savior and Lord. Only then will the heart be transformed and these vices be eliminated.

It is pure folly to think that having a primary seat belt law, that there would be any measurable difference in individuals wearing them. Mayor, forget it!
