Your Opinion: Assurances needed with 'travel advisory'

Dear Editor:

The Missouri NAACP cites instances of citizen and police violence, citizen threats, and data demonstrating disproportionate vehicular stops of people of color by law enforcement in issuing a Travel Advisory for the state of Missouri. As the legislature passed a bill that sanctions discrimination, harassment, and retaliation in the workplace this year, it is clear that the powers that be have no inclination to protect Missourians or tourists of color, sexual minorities, or women.

Last week, the President of the United States openly called for law enforcement to commit more police brutality. As this President has the support of Missouri Governor Eric Greitens, Jefferson City Mayor Carrie Tergin, and The Fraternal Order of Police, I think that both aforementioned elected officials as well as Jefferson City Police Chief Roger Schroeder and Cole County Sheriff John Wheeler need to publicly denounce the president's call for violence and make it clear that they have instructed their troops that they have a zero tolerance policy for state violence.

We are expecting droves of visitors for the solar eclipse in three weeks, and with a Travel Advisory issued, I feel we are entitled to some assurances. It's the responsible thing to do.
