Our Opinion: Seasonal stories show how your gifts transform lives

Journalism is a form of storytelling.

During the days leading to Christmas, we have enjoyed telling stories about how your generous charitable contributions are enriching the lives of people in our community.

This year's "A Christmas Wish" series has focused on area residents whose lives are being enriched by the work of United Way of Central Missouri partner agencies.

The stories have showcased:

How the Special Learning Center is helping a 2-year-old, who has been diagnosed with a rare, complex genetic disorder that affects various systems, including mobility, vision and hearing. The child is enrolled in an early intervention program at the center, which also has helped link his parents with medical and therapeutic resources.

How the Boys & Girls Club of Jefferson City is helping a single mother balance work and family by providing her two children with a safe, social setting where youth gather after school.

How Jefferson City Day Care provides affordable services along with the peace of mind that allows an area mother to be part of the workforce.

How Dreams to Reality gives women the opportunity to "dress for success," as well as a sense of self-confidence as they pursue their professional careers.

How The Salvation Army has provided resources for a woman who relocated here to assist her daughter - a mother of four - in her battle against drug addiction.

How the Central Missouri Foster Care and Adoption Association has held a woman who has welcomed more than 20 foster children into her home.

How the Council for Drug Free Youth provides a stable, social atmosphere for a family who relocated here from the Detroit suburbs.

During the fall United Way campaign, we reported on fundraising events and activities organized by supporters and volunteers.

The "A Christmas Wish" stories have allowed us to offer a glimpse into how your contributions - which lifted the campaign beyond its goal - are working in the lives of others this Christmas season.

Generosity - of time, energy, money, spirit and more - is a gift that touches the lives of both receivers and givers.

The Christmas season is a time to showcase the exchange of gifts - and blessings.
