Your Opinion: The business of political correctness

Dear Editor:

I wonder how many of your readers still remember the High Street dime stores Newberrys and Woolworths? Of course those stores existed during the good ole' days when High Street was our after school 'safe zone' hang out.

Well, it's pretty depressing for a lot of us old folks to think about how times have changed, but the following article will make one realize how much they have really changed. The article to which I refer is an 11/23/2016 article by Virginia Hale "Woolworths Axes Christmas Decorations: 'We're a Muslim Business Now'". (http://www.breitbart.com/london/2016/11/23/woolworths-axes-christmas-muslim-now/).

Quotes from the article: "Dortmund, Germany, residents were shocked to see the Woolworths branch's Yuletide selection, which included gifts, tree decorations, and chocolate Santas, was removed after just a few days on display." "A member of staff explained the sudden withdrawal boasting, "We are a Muslim business, we don't want to sell Christmas articles"."

The chain (Woolworths) went out of business in July 1997, when the company decided to focus on the Foot Locker division and renamed itself Venator Group. By 2001, the company focused exclusively on the sporting goods market, changing its name to the present Foot Locker, Inc. Retail chains using the Woolworth name survive in Austria, Germany, Mexico and, until the start of 2009, the United Kingdom. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F._W._Woolworth_Company).

Since the Oregon business, Sweet Cakes, lost their religious freedom case by refusing to make a cake for a lesbian wedding, (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweet_Cakes_by_Melissa) does the verdict in that case set a precedence to require Muslims to sell items they object to as a part of their religious beliefs? This situation, were it to arise, would be a true test of how much we value our constitutionally guaranteed individual religious freedoms vs. the leftist liberal politically correct religion of diversity and tolerance.

Since the election, I am hopeful that the direction of our judicial system will be diverted from the politically correct leftist liberal ideology (as well as being corrupt) to one of the highest ethics and morals and above all openly display a reverence for our Constitution and Bill of Rights as written and intended.

Thank God for this second chance for our republic! I hope we can regain what our forefathers fought and died for!
