Your Opinion: Another benefit of JCRC flying field

Dear Editor:

Following up on Rose Ann Dussold's excellent letter published on Aug. 21, I'd like to share another example of a benefit to young people that can flow from the existence of a flying field dedicated to radio-controlled model aircraft.

I have been an RC aircraft enthusiast since high school, over 60 years ago. This experience with model aircraft, and also amateur radio, kindled an interest that led to a career in aviation as a corporate pilot and also in medical electronics research at a major university.

My son and grandson are also RC model aircraft enthusiasts and have flown with me many times over the years at the Miller RC Flying Field at Binder Park. My grandson is now a sophomore at the Missouri University of Science & Technology at Rolla, majoring in aerospace engineering on a full-tuition Air Force ROTC scholarship. I have no doubt that his experience and continuing interest in RC model aircraft was instrumental in his winning that scholarship.

Jefferson City Parks and Recreation is to be commended for over 30 years of continuous support of the Miller RC Flying Field at Binder Park. Continuing that support into the future should provide the young people of Jefferson City with another option for a wholesome activity that can lead to a rewarding career.
