Our Opinion: Help shape the future of your public library

In an effort to rise to the challenge of re-envisioning public libraries, local officials are inviting patrons to share their visions at upcoming forums.

The Missouri River Regional Library has scheduled a series of public forums to gather patrons' input about what they like and what they would like to see in the future.

The forums are part of a strategic planning process that aligns with the Aspen Institute initiative, "Rising to the Challenge: Re-Envisioning Public Libraries."

"Libraries will always check out books," said Paula Schulte, MRRL marketing coordinator, "but new cutting-edge things are happening, including new patterns of living and accessing information."

The forums will include questions consistent with the Aspen initiative, according to Schulte, but patrons also will be asked about how public libraries can remain a relevant and integral part of their lives.

Schulte said information gathered from the forums, a survey and other sources will be discussed at a strategic planning retreat scheduled for later this year.

The forums will begin Tuesday, with the first held from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at West Elementary School. The series of seven forums will end Oct. 11, with the final session from 7-8 p.m. at the Osage County Community Center. The regional library serves both Cole and Osage counties.

The complete schedule can be found at the library's website, www.mrrl.org.

Public libraries maintain collections, distribute materials and host activities to inform, educate and entertain their patrons.

They are designed to serve the public, and they do that best when they ask patrons what they need and want, now and in the future.

We encourage you to attend and help shape the future of your public library.
