Historic preservation discusses demolition possibilities

Jefferson City's Historic Preservation Commission reviewed properties at 410 Lafayette and 623 School streets at its recent regular meeting.

Although demolition permits are anticipated for the properties in the future, the commission did not consider that issue.

The Section 106 Review is a federal requirement to study the environmental impacts of a project on a property, Chairman Art Hernandez explained.

The two properties, owned by the city for the last five years, are in the FEMA-determined flood plain. It was determined renovation to the properties would be cost-prohibitive.

The commission hopes to receive historical information about the two properties in advance of a future demolition permit application.

"More information will help us understand the historic impact," Hernandez said.

The commission also named two 2017 Landmark nominees, to be approved by the City Council. They are 1919 W. Main St. and 712 E. High St.
