Illegal immigrant faces charges after attacking woman

An illegal immigrant has been charged with attempting to rob and sexually assault a mentally challenged person in Jefferson City.

Salvador Hernandez-Nevarro, 26, is charged with second-degree robbery, third-degree assault and second-degree sexual abuse.

The incident occurred in the 100 block of West Tanner Way around 2:20 p.m. Monday, according to a Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement.

Nevarro confronted a mentally challenged woman in the alley, pushing her several times until she fell down. The woman repeatedly told him to leave her alone, but he continued to ask her where she lived.

After getting up, the woman walked to the corner of West Tanner Way and Jefferson Street. She started walking on the sidewalk, but Nevarro kept pushing her back. He then stood in front of her and pushed her chest, causing her to hit her head against the door of a business. He then grabbed and fondled her and pinned her to the door.

Nevarro grabbed the woman's arm and threw her to the ground, where she landed on her knees, then grabbed one of her legs and rolled the woman over. During this time, the woman was able to call 911 as Nevarro stood over her and taunted her.

A witness told police she heard screaming outside Ecco Lounge and saw Nevarro grab the woman's arm and throw her to the ground. The witness also saw Nevarro try to grab the woman's bag before officers arrived on the scene.

Nevarro was questioned by authorities and would not provide details of the incident. He admitted to being an illegal immigrant.
