County officials prepping for August election

As is standard practice before elections within the county, officials from the Cole County Clerk's office, along with one member each of the Republican and Democrat parties, ran a test in July 2017 on four optical voting machines to be used in an Aug. 8 special election. Roy Beal is shown feeding test ballots into the machines while Karen Simpson retrieves the sample ballots.

Officials with the Cole County Clerk's Office on Wednesday did their regularly scheduled testing of voting machines that will be used in the Aug. 8 special election.

County Clerk Steve Korsmeyer, his staff and representatives of the local Democrat and Republican parties tested four machines.

The election is for the 50th District seat in the Missouri House, which covers a portion of northern Cole County as well as southern Boone County and an eastern piece of Cooper County. Sara Walsh is the Republican candidate. She will face Democrat Michela Skelton.

The seat she is seeking was held by Caleb Jones. Jones, R-Columbia, a native of California, was re-elected to the seat in November with no opposition. Jones resigned after his appointment as Gov. Eric Greitens' deputy chief of staff. Before he left office, Gov. Jay Nixon set a special election for Aug. 8 to fill the seat.
