PARIS, Mo. (AP) - A northeast Missouri man was shot by two police officers early Friday after allegedly attacking another officer with a hatchet.
Kevin Marshall, 39, of Madison, was taken to a hospital in Columbia following the shooting that happened shortly after 1 a.m. inside a grocery store in Paris, a town of approximately 1,200 residents.
Deputies were called shortly after midnight to Madison, a town near Paris in Monroe County. The caller said a man was trying to break into a vehicle with a hatchet.
Police spotted the vehicle on U.S. 24, and a chase began. The driver was able to get away, but soon the suspect was spotted along a highway in Paris carrying a hatchet and a baseball bat with a flashlight attached to it, Missouri Highway Patrol Sgt. Brent Bernhardt said.
Marshall moved menacingly toward the officers and then went to Hickman's IGA, getting inside even though the store was closed, Bernhardt said.
Officers from several departments went in after Marshall.
"The suspect came up behind a Monroe County deputy and attacked him," Bernhardt said. A manager at the IGA store said surveillance video footage showed the deputy was attacked with the hatchet.
Officers from Monroe County and nearby Monroe City opened fire. Bernhardt said Marshall was struck at least twice.
The officer who was attacked suffered what appeared to be minor injuries but will undergo further evaluation later, Sheriff David Hoffman said.
Bernhardt said the patrol is conducting an investigation of the shooting.
"Nobody in law enforcement that I've ever met in over 30 years wants to do anything like this," Bernhardt said. "We want a peaceful resolution in anything we do."
