Dustin S. Burkhart, 32, who has been in custody since Aug. 10 on a probation violation warrant, has been charged in the shooting of Joseph W. Beeman at his residence on the same date.

Burkhart was charged Aug. 15 with the class C felony of unlawful possession of a firearm. Burkhart's status as a convicted felon prohibits him from possessing a firearm under Missouri state statute and federal law, according to the Camden County Sheriff's Office.

Burkhart has been assigned a $15,000 cash bond on the new charge, but remains in custody without bond on the probation violation.

Thirty-three-year-old Beeman, of Linn Creek, died of gunshot wounds received on Aug. 10 during a confrontation with Burkhart.

According to a news release from the Camden County Sheriff's Office, an autopsy was conducted Aug. 15.

Beeman was shot at least twice during a confrontation at Dustin S. Burkhart's residence at approximately 3 a.m. on Aug. 10 at a residence off Business Missouri 5 near Decaturville in Camden County.

Burkhart, who is being held without bond in the Camden County Adult Detention Facility on a probation violation warrant, claims Beeman allegedly showed up at the residence with a gun and demanded a woman there leave with him. The woman refused and Burkhart allegedly retrieved his own firearm from the residence.

Burkhart allegedly told Beeman to leave at which time Beeman reportedly fired the gun at Burkhart. Burkhart allegedly returned fire, striking Beeman at least twice before calling 911 and requesting medical assistance, the Camden County Sheriff's Office said in a news release. Neither Burkhart nor the woman was injured during the incident.

Detectives served a search warrant at Burkhart's residence on Aug. 10, recovering the firearm believed to be used in the shooting and several items of drug paraphernalia.

Beeman's family was notified and he was air-lifted to Missouri University Hospital where he remained in critical condition through the weekend.

The Camden County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
