UNION - A big first half led the St. Francis Borgia Lady Knights to a 53-42 win against Helias on Monday in the opening round of the Union Tournament.
Borgia led 12-6 after one period and then stretched it out to 29-13 at halftime. Helias, the fifth seed in the event, outscored fourth-seeded Borgia 20-9 in the third quarter to cut into the lead and then got it down to three points in the fourth quarter. However, the Lady Knights hit 9-of-10 free throws down the stretch to pull away.
Meghan Nappier dropped in 14 points to pace Helias.
The Lady Crusaders (8-3) will play eighth-seeded Madison College Prep, an 88-7 loser to top-seeded Eureka on Monday, at 6 p.m. Friday in the loser's bracket semifinals.
