Your Opinion: Cartoon misrepresents today's students

September 8th, 2013 by David Luther, Office of School-Community Relations, Jefferson City Public Schools in News

Dear Editor:

I was concerned to see a political cartoon in the Sept. 5 News Tribune which inferred that today's students were not knowledgeable of the Pledge of Allegiance, the National Anthem or the United States Constitution.

The cartoon perpetuates an unfair and inaccurate misconception of today's student, their knowledge and appreciation of our nation's history, and the required curriculum of the schools across the land. While there may be students who may not have a complete understanding of the three matters noted, the vast majority of our students not only can recite the Pledge of Allegiance and sing the National Anthem; but, depending on their grade level, have studied the Missouri and United States Constitutions.

It's important that our community recognize that today's children know these things; furthermore, our community should take pride knowing that many students in our schools not only take part in the support of our armed services personnel and veterans, but even take the lead in recognizing them through letter writing campaigns, assemblies, and other special events.
