Your Opinion: Changes urged for shelter adoption policy

March 20th, 2013 by Marylou Walters, Jefferson City in News

Dear Editor:

I'd like to reply to the recent letter to the editor alleging that animals are being euthanized in a gas chamber within an hour of their arrival. If true, this is abhorrent.

I would hope that animals are held at least three days to allow them to be reclaimed, if lost and if not found to be suitable for adoption after that, that they are humanely euthanized.

I do have a problem with the adoption process itself. Unlike other shelters who do not let an animal leave without being spayed/neutered a certificate is given for this procedure. No follow up is done to see if the spaying/neutering has been done. This, in itself, can result in the procedures not being done, thus resulting in more unwanted animals.

My other complaint is that unlike other shelters, no background check is done on potential adopters. I know this because I have adopted twice, merely paid my fee and left.
