WASHINGTON, Mo. (AP) - Smoking in most workplaces and public places will be banned in Washington, Mo., starting next month, but some corncob pipe smokers get an exemption.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/10hRsF6 ) reports that the Washington City Council passed a law in January banning smoking in indoor work and public places.
But at a meeting on Monday, City Administrator Jim Briggs said his office and the mayor's office fielded concerns about smoking at Missouri Meerschaum Co., which sits along the Missouri River. The company calls itself the world's oldest, largest and leading corncob pipe manufacturer.
So the council passed a new law exempting corncob pipes, but only those used for demonstrations at the factory that has been in Washington for 140 years.
The new law takes effect April 15.
