JC in running for Best of Road award

Jefferson City is in the running to be named one of the Best Small Towns in America.

In a competition sponsored by Rand McNally, Good Sam and Geocaching, Jefferson City is in the running to win in the Best of Road 2013 contest, which includes six categories: most beautiful, most fun, most patriotic, friendliest, best food and best for geocaching.

City Administrator Nathan Nickolaus said the city is encouraging people to vote for Jefferson City as most beautiful.

The contest relies on online voting, and anyone can cast their vote for eligible cities and towns. Voting began July 1 and ends Sept. 3. As of July 18, Jefferson City had received 169 votes for most beautiful, 17 votes for friendliest, eight votes for most patriotic, two votes for best of geocaching, two votes for most fun, and two votes for best for food.

Winners will be announced Oct. 7 and will receive a feature in the 2015 Rand McNally Road Atlas, a free custom iPhone app and an online travel guide to promote the winning cities as a top destination.
