Your Opinion: Response to Pavely on high court ruling

Dear Editor:

I read with interest the letter of Mark Pavely in which he criticized the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in the DOMA case.

With all due respect, the court dealt with the issue of who has the right to define what a marriage is, states of the federal government. The court stated that when states make the decision that same sex couples can marry, the federal government can not arbitrarily ignore that decision.

The court made it clear that the issue of what is a marriage, at this time, is to be decided by the states.

They made no general ruling that all same sex persons are entitled to the same tax benefits as a man-woman couple.
