JC man pleads guilty in attempted escape

A Jefferson City man has pleaded guilty to federal charges of methamphetamine distribution and attempting to escape from custody in late 2012.

There was no word on when Mitchell Atterberry, 36, would be sentenced.

A Jefferson City woman, Amanda Lesh, 35, has already pleaded guilty to helping Atterberry try to escape from the Morgan County Jail, where he was being held.

She smuggled a hacksaw blade into his cell.

Atterberry told Lesh in a recorded telephone conversation that they "worked on it late last night, couldn't get it done" and in a later call that day said they hoped to get it done "by tonight."

The day after the phone call was recorded, authorities received a tip about the escape plans.

Deputies found the window had been damaged. The metal support beam had been cut most of the way through. They also found a 10-inch saw blade in the mat on the top bunk of the cell and a smaller 2-inch saw blade that appeared to have broken off the larger blade.
