Tax petition measures in court over estimates

March 23rd, 2012 in News

A former deputy state auditor told Cole County Presiding Circuit Judge Patricia Joyce Thursday the cost estimates don't give voters enough information, on two different petitions proposing to phase out Missouri's income tax and replace it with an expanded sales tax.

Former Deputy Auditor Chuck Pierce, a CPA who now runs private consulting businesses, said the summaries should have told voters the "one clear fact that this eliminates $7.5 billion in revenue, and how many additional steps the state will take to enact the amendment."

But the state auditor's official who wrote the fiscal note summary told Joyce the language that could appear on voters' November ballots meets the state's legal requirements.
