City prepares ADA compliance plan

Jefferson City is preparing a transition plan for all city facilities to update its compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

At the Parks and Recreation Commission meeting Tuesday, department Director Bill Lockwood said the plan would involve updating all parks facilities, including playgrounds and swimming pools. Lockwood said he hopes to coordinate greatly with other city staff, but because ADA requirements for parks are more complicated than for standard facilities.

Interim City Counselor Drew Hilpert said the plan is part of a citywide self-evaluation to update all buildings and facilities to comply with current ADA regulations. The steps laid out in the plan would not need to be performed immediately, he said, but could be implemented throughout a longer period of time as funds become available.

Lockwood said the commission would be updated as the plan progresses and they begin looking at using future capital improvement funds to upgrade facilities.
