Former sheriff's employee placed on probation

Cole County Associate Circuit Court judge Tom Sodergren recently placed a former employee of the Cole County Sheriff's Department on two years unsupervised probation for pleading guilty to amended charges in connection with her admission to stealing from the department.

Deborah Thomas, 38, of 1704 Bunker Hill Road, had been charged with two counts of felony stealing, but those were amended to two counts of misdemeanor stealing.

Thomas agreed to pay fines and costs to the court according to a payment plan. If she fails to make the required payments, legal action may be taken against Thomas by the court for the entire balance.

Thomas was also sentenced to 30 days in the Cole County Jail, but was approved for the electronic shackle program.
