Cole County negotiating to house federal prisoners

Sheriff: Price has become sticking point

June 24th, 2012 in News

Negotiations are continuing to make the new Cole County Jail a "home" for federal prisoners.

The jail opened in Jefferson City last July, and Sheriff Greg White said they had to wait until they had been in operation for at least six months before the county could apply to the federal government to provide temporary housing for inmates in federal custody.

"The best offer we have gotten from the feds was $35 per day," White said. "It has been suggested by other facilities and by the U.S. Marshal Service that most places that house these prisoners are getting $100 per day."

In September 2009, White said housing federal prisoners could bring in $600,000 in revenue.
