Woodwinds need to breathe.

As sophomore Edward Crouse composed "The Tragedy of the Hero" this fall for a fully orchestrated symphony, among his challenges was to write for unfamiliar instruments.

He plays with the Jefferson City Symphony Orchestra, so the violist is more comfortable with strings.

But he must have made everything work. The Missouri Composers Orchestra Project awarded his eight-minute work first prize with a $500 honorarium.
