City opens year with violence

A shooting and stabbing kept Jefferson City police busy on the first day of 2012.

Police are seeking a suspect or suspects who shot and injured two Jefferson City residents about 5:17 a.m. Sunday in the parking lot of Break Time, 810 Stadium Blvd.

Jefferson City police officers and Cole County sheriff's deputies responded to the convenience store for a 911 call of several shots being fired.

Upon arrival, officers discovered multiple shell casings on the lot and in the street in front of the business.

At about the same time, another 911 call was received from Capital Region Medical Center concerning two subjects with bullet wounds who entered the emergency room.

The victim's vehicle was located outside the hospital, still running. The vehicle had multiple bullet holes in it.

Investigation shows that multiple shots had been fired on or near the lot of Break Time and that there was probably more than one shooter involved.

Two Jefferson City residents, 20-year-old Gregory Ruff and Markus Davis, 19, each were shot.

Ruff was transferred to University Hospital and Davis remained at Capitol Region Medical Center for treatment. Both were treated and released.

Shortly before the shooting was reported, according to police reports, the stabbing was reported at 4:57 a.m. when a 911 call was received about an assault with a knife and property destruction in the 900 block of East Cedar Way.

Upon officers' arrival, the investigation determined two groups of individuals were involved in an altercation at a Club Motivation, 2425 Industrial Drive.

The victim and her friends went home and were followed by the suspects.

Upon arrival on East Cedar Way, another fight ensued and a 29-year-old Jefferson City resident, Nikita Lovelace, was stabbed in the upper thigh.

The windows in her vehicle were also broken out.

Officers located the suspect vehicle and the victim was able to identify Kashay Davis, a 19-year-old Jefferson City resident, as the one who stabbed her and Atasha McCann, a 21-year-old Jefferson City resident, as the one who broke the window in her vehicle.

Davis and McCann were arrested and taken to the Cole County Jail.

Charges for second-degree assault are being sought against Davis. Property destruction charges are being sought against McCann.
