Just three days after state Sen. Kevin Engler explained why his bill to allow prescription drug purchase monitoring is a good idea, his hometown newspaper reported the case of a woman charged with illegally obtaining prescriptions.
"Her charges stem from an instance in January when she used fraud to obtain medication from two pharmacies on the same doctor's prescription," the Farmington Press reported.
"The woman is not facing charges for receiving ... 108 prescriptions totaling more than 4,100 pills during what police are calling a "doctor shopping' spree in 2011."
But she might under Engler's bill, which the Senate's Financial & Governmental Organizations and Elections Committee last week endorsed on a 7-2 vote, sending the bill to the full Senate for debate.
