Your Opinion: Whitney Houston remembered

Your Opinion: Whitney Houston remembered

February 15th, 2012 by William Stine, Jefferson City in News

Dear Editor:

Jim Dyke's Valentine's Day remembrance of singer Whitney Houston was a most sincere and timely editorial statement.

By the randomness of fate, the Jefferson City Cantorum sang "When You Believe" with the Jefferson City Symphony at Lincoln University's Mitchell Auditorium four days before her tragic death. Last evening I saw her historic duo of this song on Youtube.

The song is from the movie "the Prince of Egypt." When Whitney and Mariah Carey sang it in 1998 for an Academy Awards ceremony she was at the top of her game.

Our performance with the symphony was an inspired one that Tuesday evening. Singing with a fine Jefferson City orchestra is such a rare treat.

We'll get to do it again on our own in May at the Miller Performing Arts Center in our spring concert. We then will have the chance to formally remember Whitney, as Jim Dyke did this Valentine's Day.
