Administrators with the Jefferson City Public Schools on Friday shared with parents several suggestions for how to help their children cope with the tragic mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

"Dr. Mitchell posted a letter to families online at," said David Luther, assistant to the superintendent. "But our district's response to the tragedy was more about being aware of students and staff and their emotional state."

News of the attack was a sobering and terrible shock, Luther agreed.

"We, at the Jefferson City Public Schools, are deeply saddened to hear the news of the elementary school shooting in Connecticut," Luther said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with those families and that community."

Luther said safety is the district's first priority, and administrators are proactive in taking measures to keep children safe. "If you have questions or concerns, please contact your school's principal," he said.

District staff also posted several tips - suggestions by professionals in the mental health field - for coping on the district's Facebook page.
