There was a heart-warming article in Friday's paper about the "Secret Santa" who gave away $100,000 of his own money to residents of storm-hit New Jersey and New York.
The picture accompanying the story shows a woman giving him a hug, but you can see only his back because he projects his anonymity. Who can see that picture and read the story without feeling a deep respect for what he is doing with his money? Please remember this story when "the rich" are collectively castigated for their selfishness.
I found myself wondering how this would have looked if the liberals had a hand in it. First of all, the money would not have been voluntarily distributed, it would have been taken from the guy through taxation.
Then an absurd portion would have gone to administrative costs for the different levels of government that disbursed it. The small portion that actually found its way to the intended recipients would have arrived as an impersonal check or bank deposit and some politician would claim credit for it. The guy from whom the money came would have been deprived of the joy of his uncoerced generosity and the hugs and smiles that the recipients gave him in return.
The best kindness is that which you do yourself.
