Garden club to help landscape at new shelter

December 1st, 2012 in News

Several members of the Bittersweet Garden Club are in the early stages of landscaping around the recently opened Jefferson City Animal Shelter in Hyde Park. From left, Jan Schwaller, Julie Long and Marge Talken put the finishing touches on the bark compost around the base of the just-planted Royal Raindrops crabapple tree. Next spring the crew will take on a project of multiple plants around the building's perimeter.

A colorful tree planted by the local Bittersweet Garden Club is the latest community donation to the newly built Jefferson City Animal Shelter on Hyde Park Road.

"I love dogs and cats, and I'm a fanatical gardener," said Jan Schwaller, who is a member of both Bittersweet and the animal shelter's friends group.

Each year, the garden club president chooses a project to be done in the community. And the National Federated Garden Club had encouraged clubs to plant a flowering tree in a public place.
