The beginning of the school year has been characterized by activity.
The buzz of activity runs the gamut, both public and parochial, and including elementary, secondary and university levels.
And it is hardly confined to classrooms.
Activity abounds:
• On athletic fields, where football, softball and golf teams are honing skills and competing, as fans and spectators watch.
• In band rooms and outdoors, where musicians from orchestras to marching bands rehearse and entertain audiences.
• At community events, which bring residents, educators and students together.
This past weekend, the Jefferson City Public School District hosted a staff and family barbecue connected with a quilt raffle sponsored by the public schools' foundation.
On Saturday, student groups - including Helias Catholic High School cheerleaders, participated in a Heart Walk sponsored by the American Heart Association.
Also Saturday, community organizations participated in a "Week of Welcome" event for returning Lincoln University students.
The first priority of education, obviously, is academics.
But talented, energetic students have demonstrated an ability to excel academically and beyond.
We look forward watching, enjoying and joining with students in the many opportunities and activities the coming school year will bring.
