Opponents organize over Missouri court measure

August 23rd, 2012 in News

With the Nov. 6 general elections just 101⁄2 weeks away, a group headed by six former Missouri Supreme Court chief justices has launched its campaign to fight a proposed constitutional amendment affecting judicial appointments.

And a group supporting the amendment said Thursday in a news release that "special interests ... are spreading false or misleading information about Amendment 3."

The amendment's opponents have formed the "Missourians for Fair and Impartial Courts Committee," which held three news conferences Thursday to urge Missouri voters to reject the proposed amendment.

With slim majorities, lawmakers last spring sent the amendment to the November ballot, proposing to change the make-up of the Appellate Judicial Commission that nominates three people to fill vacancies on the state's appeals and Supreme courts, then sends those names to the governor, who chooses one of the three to be the new judge.
