Lawmaker discusses how naval service helped shape his legislative perspective

"A large amount of work to do in a limited amount of time" - that is how state Rep. Rick Stream, R-Kirkwood, describes his obligations at the state Capitol. However, the lawmaker acknowledges the training received in the Navy strengthens his ability to prioritize the many legislative responsibilities he encounters.

A 1967 graduate of Kirkwood High School, Stream pursued a college education prior to enlisting in the service.

Following his graduation from University of Missouri-St. Louis in 1971, he was accepted into the Navy's officer program.

"I always knew I would be in the military," Stream said. His father had served as a naval officer in the Pacific during World War II.

During the 19 weeks of initial training, he received instruction focused on three primary areas: academics, athletics and military performance.
