Capital City Cook-off set for this weekend

April 19th, 2012 in News

It's barbecue, beer and good music, all for a good cause. What more do you need to kick off Jefferson City's social season?

This weekend will be the sixth annual Capital City Cook-off, which brings nearly 70 of the country's top outdoor cooks to the Jefferson City Jaycees Fairgrounds for the Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned competition.

From 5-8:30 p.m. Friday, the public is invited to the "Buck-A-Bone" event. For $15, people can sample as many barbecue ribs as they like from 39 teams that will cook around 1 1/2 tons of ribs. Local businesses including Robo Touchless Car Wash, Wallstreet Insurance and Fechtel Beverage will cook the ribs in a competition, which will be judged by a blind panel, said Bruce Ring, an event organizer. Last year's winner, Zesto South, will be back this year.

A beer garden and live music by Jason Luebbering & Turn Style will round out the event.

Tickets can be bought in advance at Scruggs Lumber, Zesto's South, Jefferson Bank, Providence Bank and the Special Learning Center. Any of the remaining 2,000 tickets will be sold at the event, Ring said.

The Capital City Cook-Off raises money for the Special Learning Center Foundation.
