Thursday's NHL Preseason Capsules

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - New captain Chris Pronger, recovering from two offseason surgeries, made his preseason debut in the Flyers' 2-1 win over the New Jersey Devils on Thursday night.

Pronger, who last played April 30 during a second-round playoff loss to the Boston Bruins, underwent procedures on his wrist and back. But general manager Paul Holmgren and coach Peter Laviolette are optimistic he'll be ready for the regular season. And on Thursday, he took a big step, registering an assist, one shot, two blocked shots, and even a 2:00 roughing penalty.

Jaromir Jagr, one of the Flyers' marquee offseason signings, scored the game winner, his fourth of the preseason, on a power play at 12:48 of the third.

Martin Brodeur and Ilya Bryzgalov, former All-Star goaltenders for the Devils and Flyers, respectively, started. Brodeur (25 saves) went the duration. Bryzgalov was replaced at 10:30 of the second by Sergei Bobrovsky, after 17 stops.

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - David Moss scored twice and added an assist and Calgary wrapped up the preseason with a victory over Phoenix.

Calgary had the second-best power play in the league at home last season and it showed flashes of that prowess in the second period, connecting twice with the extra man to open up a 2-0 lead.

Moss opened the scoring at 11:47 of the second on a backhand after being neatly set up by a clever passing sequence between Niklas Hagman and Olli Jokinen.

Anton Babchuk made it 2-0 in the final minute of the second, sending a slap shot past Jason LaBarbera, who was screened by Curtis Glencross.

Boyd Gordon and Ray Whitney scored for Phoenix, both goals against Miikka Kiprusoff coming in the final four minutes of the game.

Kiprusoff, who played his first full game, ended up with 21 saves.

The Canucks (2-5), who lost to the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday night, again choose to keep many of their stars off the ice. Mikael Samuelsson and Manny Malhotra were the only Canucks to play who recorded double figures in goals last season.
