2 caught stealing scrap metal

Two Jefferson City residents have been charged with stealing scrap metal from a local business.

Phillip Small, 48, or 1512 Sunset Lake Road, and Tammy Smith, 40, of 1231 E. Dunklin St., are each charged with one count of felony stealing.

According to a Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statements, Small and Smith were found behind Capitol Machine, 1101 Industrial, Sunday night, loading a large load of scrap steel in the rear of a vehicle.

Both told officers that they were taking the metal to sell for profit as scrap. Smith told officers she had heard about large loads of metal from friends at this location.

Company officials estimated the metal that Small and Smith were trying to take was worth about $700.
