Committee approves city budget for 2012

After less than a month of discussions, the proposed 2012 budget has been approved by the Budget Committee and will be sent for approval by the full City Council.

At the budget meeting Thursday, council members voted to approve the proposed 2012 budget with $33,571,699 in general fund revenue and $32,900,523 in general fund expenditures, leaving $671,176 to go into the general fund balance.

Fourth Ward Councilwoman Carrie Carroll and Third Ward Councilman Bob Scrivner voted against approving the budget.

From Mayor Eric Struemph's proposed list of $2.266 million in adjustments from last year's budget, the committee made several changes to general fund expenditures, including:

• $22,000 to continue the city's glass recycling program,

• $15,000 to expand the glass recycling and household hazardous waste program,

• $65,000 to add an IT staff position to begin a system of electronic records management, and

• $283,252 for a 1 percent across the board salary increase for full-time city employees and a 1 percent merit increase.
