JC school board supports "academies'

FOUR SEASONS VILLAGE, Mo. - No votes were taken during a 31⁄2-hour retreat Sunday, but Jefferson City's seven Board of Education members favor using "academies" in any reshaping of the district's high school programs.

"We're fully committed to the academies," School Board President Alan Mudd said at the end of the board's retreat at the Lake of the Ozarks.

As the district proposes the concept, each small learning community, or "academy," would include between 300 and 500 high school students who've expressed an interest in the same subject area, so they would get "an emphasis on a general career interest working hand-in-hand with a liberal arts education."
