Dad accused of letting kid, 9, drive to face trial

WOODHAVEN, Mich. (AP) - A judge has ordered a Detroit-area man to stand trial on charges alleging he allowed his 9-year-old daughter to drive him around at night because he had been drinking.

Woodhaven District Court Judge Michael McNally ruled Tuesday that 39-year-old Shawn Weimer should stand trial on a second-degree child abuse charge.

His lawyers say they're disappointed by the seriousness of the charge and will seek to have the felony count dismissed.

Weimer's daughter testified last week about driving her father's van in the wee hours of Oct. 8. She says her father had consumed half a bottle of whiskey and she agreed to drive but felt a "little scared."

Police arrested Weimer after pulling over the van and finding his daughter behind the wheel.
