'Passport Fair' on tap Saturday

Jefferson City's Main Post Office, 131 W. High St., hosts another "Passport Fair" from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday.

Since January 2007, all people traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South American countries, the Caribbean and Bermuda have been required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, U.S. Coast Guard merchant mariner document or an alien registration card (Form I-551) in order to re-enter the United States.

Those requirements were extended to travelers using land or sea transportation, including ferries, in 2008.

Individuals must apply for their passports in person.

Adults, 16 years and older, pay a $25 acceptance fee to the U.S. Postal Service and a $110 application fee to the U.S. Department of State.

People under 16 pay the $25 acceptance fee to the Post Office, but only an $80 application fee to the State Department.

If getting a passport card, which has a more limited usage than the passport book, the USPS $25 acceptance fee is the same, but the State Department's application fee is $30 for those older than 16 and $15 for those under 16.

All applicants must show:

• Proof of U.S. citizenship, such as a certified birth certificate issued by the city, county or state government (a hospital birth certificate is not acceptable); or a previous U.S. passport; a certificate of citizenship; or a naturalization certificate.

• Proof of identity, such as a current driver's license or state Revenue Department-issued identification; a previous U.S. passport; a certificate of citizenship; a naturalization certificate; or a government-issued ID or military photo ID.

The passport application also requires two recent, identical photographs. They can be taken on-site for an additional $15 fee.

Officials recommend that customers apply for passports as early as possible, but at least 10 weeks before a scheduled departure, to avoid any extra costs associated with expediting the application.

More forms or information on the costs of, and how to apply for, a passport book and/or passport card can be found at or

U.S. citizens also may obtain passport information by phone, in English and Spanish, by calling the National Passport Information Center toll-free at 877-487-2778.
