KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - A Kansas City man was sentenced to 15 years in prison for killing a Missouri National Guardsman during a botched carjacking.
Twenty-one-year-old Braulio C. Gomez was sentenced Thursday for the August 2008 murder of 27-year-old Erick Gandarilla.
Gandarilla, who had deployed to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, was shot while sitting in a Cadillac Escalade at a car wash.
The Kansas City Star reports that other defendants, who have pleaded guilty, said Gandarilla was shot when he resisted when they tried to steal his car.
Gomez consistently maintained his innocence. His first trial ended with a hung jury. He was also sentenced to five years for attempted robbery and three years each for two counts of armed criminal action, all to be served concurrently.
