Sly James officially becomes mayor of Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Kansas City's new mayor is promising to make the city more efficient, ethical and unified.

Sly James took the formal oath of office Monday, becoming the city's 56th mayor. He says he would like to make Kansas City one of the most ethical cities in the country.

James had taken the oath during a smaller ceremony on Sunday, because the city charter requires the mayor to be sworn in on May 1. Monday's ceremony came before a packed room at City Hall.

The new mayor says his administration will try new approaches to create a more efficient city, and will make decisions based on facts.

Twelve city council members also took the oath of office Monday.
