Safety panel: Five fire stations need improvements

July 1st, 2011 in News

The Jefferson City Public Safety Committee on Thursday advanced to the City Council a proposal to make improvements at the five fire stations in the city.

The plan brought forward by interim City Administrator Nathan Nickolaus calls for $271,000 in improvements to be funded through the city's half-cent sales tax money for capital improvements, as well as savings from projects that came in under budget.

The main things to be addressed will be vehicle exhaust systems and getting fresh air for those systems to meet current codes.

During a presentation from Peckham and Wright Architects Inc. on Thursday, city officials were told the architects found it would be cheaper to build new facilities at Station 2 on East McCarty Street and Station 4 on Ellis Boulevard than make improvements to them.
