Columbia teen with gun at school linked to shootings

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - Police say a 17-year-old who had a handgun at a Columbia High School was involved in two shootings during the weekend.

The teenager and his girlfriend were arrested Tuesday after the gun was discovered at Douglas High School. Police spokeswoman Jill Wieneke says a staff member found the loaded .45-caliber gun in the girl's purse.

TThe 17-year-old admitted to police that he had been present at two shootings during the weekend, one at the Town and Country Bowling Lanes and another at a city intersection.

Two juvenile males were injured in latter shooting. Wieneke says investigators believe the shootings were gang related.

She says the teen told police that he was checking the gun's safety at the school and asked his girlfriend to carry it.
