Your Opinion: Restore civility to political discourse

January 13th, 2011 by Jack Ryan, Jefferson City in News

Dear Editor:

A series of media interviews extending back over several months reveal that Clarence Dupnik, in addition to being sheriff of Pima County, Arizona, also harbors left-leaning political views.

His remarks regarding the recent mass shooting in Tucson confirms that analysis.

But, even those with left-leaning political sentiments sometimes say reasonable things.

We'll never know for sure what factors influenced that deranged shooter but it's certain that a constant barrage of inflammatory rhetoric from the right and left creates an environment in which well-reasoned, deliberative action is impaired.

No one should suggest the intent of the First Amendment to our Constitution be abridged nor should anyone oppose a more honest, more reasoned, more civil discussion of important political issues.

Merely citing a long history of crude, disingenuous, even vile political maneuvering in American politics does not justify it today.

Both the political right and left need to clean up their act and "We the People," through our reaction to politicians and media personalities, need to make it happen.

Sheriff Dupnik was right on target if he was suggesting more honesty, reason and civility in American culture and politics.
