About 500 learn new hands-only CPR technique

In a span of 15 minutes, many Jefferson City residents learned skills Thursday that could possibly save a life in the future.

In conjunction with the American Heart Association, St. Mary's Health Center helped teach 500 residents the new hands-only CPR method recommended by the American Heart Association for lay people to use in an emergency situation.

"The older method involved a lot of steps, and there seemed to be a fear among people that they would forget the steps and not know what to do. So many times, they may not have even tried," said Becki Collier, corporate events director for the American Heart Association. "There are two steps with this method. Call 911, and give fast and hard compressions to the center of the chest."
