Your Opinion: Event remembering Capitol fire commended

Dear Editor:

Here is a shout-out for Jim Dyke, artist and editorial cartoonist for the News Tribune. It comes on the eve of the 100th anniversary of the great Capitol fire of 1911.

The fire and the fighting of it were pivotal events in our city's history. Out of its ashes would rise our present Capitol building. He remembered the event big time with his new oil-painting "Capitol on Fire" and his plans for events here starting Feb. 5.

Late in her life, my mother still recalled that glow in the nighttime sky from her father's farm in the Frog Hollow bottoms. Thanks to Jim we have more than a book in the library to remember our sense of place.
