Man, 52, charged in mother's neglect death

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (AP) - Authorities have charged a 52-year-old Independence man with involuntary manslaughter in the death of his mother.

Jackson County prosecutors charged James E. Owens on Wednesday, accusing him of failing to provide adequate "nourishment, hygiene and medical care" to his 74-year-old mother, Carol F. Brown. An autopsy showed Brown died from complications of infected ulcers and sepsis due to neglect.

The Kansas City Star reports (http://bit.ly/trSX32) that a police affidavit says Owens told detectives that he did not feed his mother or summon medical help after he thought she had suffered a stroke because she had said she wanted to die at home.

Online court records don't list a lawyer for Owens, who was being held on $100,000 bond.
