LAKE OF THE OZARKS, Mo. - An hour-long downpour didn't dampen the festivities too much Tuesday as Missouri Department of Transportation personnel, dignitaries and community leaders marked the opening of the Horseshoe Bend Parkway Extension (to be called Missouri 242) and the U.S. 54 Expressway.

The two highways, which have been under construction for more than a year, will allow through traffic to bypass the more congested areas of the lake.

The 54 Expressway will give drivers access to all the amenities in the lake without having to navigate through the heavy traffic areas in the business and entertainment districts, officials said.

The Horseshoe Bend Parkway extension will give through traffic direct access from the 54 Expressway to the Lake of the Ozarks Community Bridge to the Westside and the business district in Lake Ozark. Additionally, the 2-mile-long, four-lane highway opens a 500-acre interior section of the city of Lake Ozark to development.
