I read with interest about the proposed sewer rate increase for those users living outside the city limits. Although I reside in the city limits, it raised my ire because what other rate increases is the City of Jefferson contemplating that will unknowingly affect us, the city residents.
This latest proposal is not about a rate increase but a backhanded method of getting these folks to agree to annexation. If they can't acquire annexation though normal means, they are literally holding a gun to their heads by stating "annexation will help their cause." They should file a compliant with the police department that undue force is being applied by the City Council to acquire grounds illegally.
What I find difficult to understand is why it costs those users four times the rate we city folks are charged. Yet, if they agree to annexation, their rate will be adjusted downward dramatically.
The economics' of today is tough on a number of citizens whether they reside in the city or county. It's another ploy being used to get those folks to agree to being annexed. It's a form of blackmail that shouldn't be tolerated.
Come election day, we voters need to recall these events and vote intelligently. This is suppose to be a democracy, but tactics like this one, leave me wondering.
