CARSON, Calif. (AP) - Robbie Keane scored in the 21st minute of his dynamic MLS debut, leading the Los Angeles Galaxy to a 2-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night.
The Irish national team striker showed off his trademark cartwheel-somersault goal celebration to fans on a new continent after he converted a pass from David Beckham. Keane was active and aggressive in his debut while playing into the 72nd minute.
Los Angeles acquired Keane on Monday from Tottenham Hotspur, putting the 10th-leading goal-scorer in Premier League history alongside Beckham and captain Landon Donovan. Keane appeared to fit in immediately, generating several good scoring chances in addition to his goal.
Crew 2, Union 1
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Andres Mendoza converted a penalty kick in the 51st minute and Columbus defeated Philadelphia to increase its lead in the Eastern Conference.
Emilio Renteria scored for the Crew (11-7-7) in the 37th minute with a left-footed redirect of a pass from Rogers, but the Union (8-6-10) equalized five minutes later on their seventh corner kick, with Veljko Paunovic heading the cross from Keon Daniel that goalkeeper William Hesmer had no chance to stop.
The Crew (11-7-7) are five points ahead of Houston atop the Eastern Conference, while the Union (8-6-10) fell a point back of the Dynamo.
Red Bulls 2, Revolution 2
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) - Milton Caraglio and Dane Richards scored two goals apiece in the draw.
Caraglio scored in the 15th and 37th minutes to give New England a 2-0 lead at halftime, but Red Bulls' midfielder Richards answered in the 53rd and 87th to get New York the road point.
The Revs went short-handed when Kenny Mansally was ejected in the 55th minute, but New York's man-advantage was brief, as Teemu Taino was ejected in the 69th.
Caraglio was signed as the New England's first-ever designated player on Aug. 2.
Sounders 1, FC Dallas 0
FRISCO, Texas (AP) - Mauro Rosales scored in the 16th minute and Seattle pushed its record to 8-1-4 over its last 13 MLS matches and moved past Dallas into second place in the Western Conference standings.
Dallas saw its four-game home unbeaten streak (3-0-1), in which it had outscored its opponents 7-0, snapped, and is now 2-3-3 overall in its last eight MLS contests.
Dynamo 3, Real Salt Lake 2
HOUSTON (AP) - Alex Dixon scored his first career goal in stoppage time and Houston extended its unbeaten streak to five matches and moved from fourth to second place in the Eastern Conference standings.
Bobby Boswell equalized for Houston (8-7-11) in the 70th minute just 10 minutes after Luis Gil gave Real Salt Lake a 2-1 lead when he headed a cross from Fabian Espindola past Houston goalkeeper Tally Hall.
Espindola scored in the 28th minute to give Real Salt Lake (10-7-6) a 1-0 lead, but Houston dominated the second half and tied the game on Brian Ching's team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 47th minute.
Chivas USA 2, Rapids 2
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (AP) - Reserve Laurent Courtois scored his first goal of the year in the 86th minute for Chivas USA.
Juan Pablo Angel also scored for Chivas USA (7-8-10) after being acquired this week from the Los Angeles Galaxy for a third-round pick in next year's supplemental draft.
Jeff Larentowicz had the apparent go-ahead goal on a header in the 69th minute. Caleb Folan had the game's first goal for Colorado (10-6-11), which extended its unbeaten streak to six games.
Timbers 2, Whitecaps 1
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Jorge Perlaza had a goal and an assist, and Portland beat Cascadia Cup rival Vancouver in the first match this season between the Major League Soccer expansion teams.
The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for the Timbers (8-12-5), who are holding onto playoff hopes in their first season. The Whitecaps (3-13-9), in the basement of the Western Conference standings, have lost three of their last four games.
The match was the latest showdown in the fan-created Cascadia Cup rivalry between the Timbers, the Whitecaps and the Seattle Sounders, which came about in 2004 when all three Pacific Northwest teams competed in a lower division.
